Position Summary

Equine Veterinary Medical Center (EVMC), a member of QF, is a state-of-the-art equine referral hospital and medical center located in Doha, Qatar, open for all horses in the state of Qatar and the Gulf region. EVMC is equipped with a 3T MRI, CT-scan, nuclear scintigraphy, and the latest technology in x-ray and ultrasound. Our center has three operating theaters, clinical and research laboratories, lameness examination areas on three surfaces, a farrier workshop, and a pharmacy. Other specialized medical services include internal medicine, neonatal ICU, reproduction, sports medicine, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesiology/pain management. In addition, EVMC consists of a state-of-the-art veterinary diagnostic laboratory, including necropsy services. The center offers excellent research opportunities for clinicians interested in developing an independent or collaborative research program. A designated research laboratory space equipped for cell culture, molecular biology, chemistry, and endocrinology, supervised by a full-time laboratory researcher will be available to assist and coordinate laboratory research activities. The Equine Veterinary Medical Center is seeking applicants for a full-time position as Senior Laboratory Technologist ( 1 year contract)

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine veterinary laboratory testing under the directions of the Manager Diagnostic Laboratory.Collect, evaluate and prepare biological samples for laboratory testing to support diagnosis of clinical conditions in the horses registered with EVMC.
  • Ability to perform lab tests on samples from animals for biochemistry, hematology, parasitology, urinalysis, and endocrinology.
  • Perform and monitor laboratory work ensuring compliance with standards that EVMC sets out.
  • Able to set up, run, calibrate the laboratory equipment, set up the assay, produce and report acceptable lab results and able to create inventories and record keeping.
  • Maintain the laboratory equipment in optimum working conditions, clean and sterilize the laboratory section and the equipment used in the line of duty.
  • Able to enlist, forecast and maintain the laboratory supplies stock, maintain inventory and laboratory stores
  • Able to generate reports for laboratory results, stock count, weekly and monthly performance reports.
  • Able to assist in conducting scientific research, analyzing laboratory result data using simple statistics techniques.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English language in writing and orally with all staff. Effective communication in Arabic language an asset.
  • Welling to support interns, externs, visiting veterinarians and veterinary students as required.
  • Computing skills, familiarity with Microsoft Office and flexibility in performing duties other than mentioned above.
  • Able to use Lab Information Management System, and Hospital & Veterinary Management System.
  • Assist in laboratory accreditation process, validation and quality management.

Guided by all internal EVMC policies and procedures and is required to maintain the high standards of professional conduct expected from the Veterinary profession. Any laboratory test or use of laboratory facility instructed or wished by any unauthorized person is in violation of EVMC Policies and Procedures.

Laboratory technicians may work long hours including evenings, weekends and holidays if necessary to deal with medical emergencies according to EVMC Policies and Procedures. Ensure safety of self and all personnel exposed to infectious tissues and body fluids, and hazardous chemicals.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with EVMC staff as well as visiting veterinarians and students must be maintained at all time.

These skills are essential for a favourable outcome of the daily workload and better technical performance. Excellent and respectful communication with clients and referring veterinarians is an essential component in upholding the image of EVMC as a referral Veterinary Centre of excellence.

It is expected from the Veterinary Laboratory Technicians to be able to detect errors while performing routine laboratory analyses and be familiar with standard approach to prevent such problems.

In the case of emergency STAT samples and other urgent laboratory issues, it is expected that the Veterinary Laboratory Technician should take the responsibility with integrity in processing, analysis and reporting the laboratory samples.

Veterinary Laboratory Technician should be aware of the potential risks of handling test samples originated from the horses exhibiting clinical symptoms and also laboratory equipment such as high speed centrifuges, hot plates and so on.

It is the primary responsibility of the Veterinary Laboratory Technician to be the care taker of chemicals, reagents, diagnostic kits, supplies and equipment and to guard against misuse or abuse of such materials by unauthorized persons.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology / Medical Technology.
  • Extensive experience in clinical laboratory testing and related skills.
  • A good level of spoken English and adequate written English to enable communication with other staff and keeping of medical records is essential.
  • Basic computer skills to enter and retrieve medical records.
  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience in a clinical laboratory. Qatar Council of Health Care Practitioner (QCPH) License an asset.
